Lion - Five Sisters Zoo

Lions may be best known for the large brown manes on the males, combined with a coat that ranges from cream to a burnished gold. Female lions, or lionesses, do not possess a mane and young male cubs will not grow one until maturity. The most social of the big cat species, a pride of lions can number up to 20 individuals. Lion prides will typically let out a roar at the beginning of the day which can be heard up to 5 miles away. Once found across Africa, Asia, and portions of Europe, Lions now occupy only 10% of their historic range.

Facts

Diet: Carnivore; zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, some smaller mammals and carrion are also consumed.

Weight: 110- 270 kg

Length: 1.3-2.5m

Habitat: Sub-Saharan Africa, small isolated Indian population; prefer open savannah and scrubland but some groups found in open forest areas.

Life Span: 8-15 years
