Yellow-footed Tortoise - Five Sisters Zoo

Named for the distinctive yellow scales on their legs and brown and yellow hue to the scutes (bony plates) that make up their shell, the Yellow-footed Tortoise is native to South America. They are primarily a terresterial (land dwelling) rather than aquatic turtle species. They are generally a solitary species, though individuals have been observed sharing space to access resources such as fallen fruit on the forest floor. The Yellow-footed Tortoise is the largest mainland tortoise in South America.
