Royal Python - Five Sisters Zoo

Also known as a Ball Python, the Royal Python is a constrictor type of snake, using its strong body to immobilize prey by wrapping around and squeezing it. Individuals have brown markings with lighter medium-brown spots with dark spots. Their ventral scales (on their underside) are generally white.

Diet: Carnivore; small mammals, especially rodents, and birds.

Weight: 1-2kg with females being larger

Length: 90cm-1.20m

Habitat: Central and West Africa; found in savannahs, grasslands and forests, with some individuals also living around human habitation.

Life Span: 10 years in the wild, over 30 years under human care

Adapted to Survive

  • The colour of their top scales mimics dead leaves, camouflaging them on the forest floor.
  • If food is scarce, they can go weeks and even months without eating.
