Guianan Squirrel Monkey - Five Sisters Zoo

With a mostly grey body and black cap of fur at the top of their head, Guianan Squirrel Monkeys are distinguishable by the bright yellow fur on their legs and torso. They have pointed ears with white fur on the outside and also white fur ringing their eyes. They can live in groups of up to 300 monkeys, sometimes also sharing space and resources with other small primates.

Habitat: French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil; primary and secondary forests, preferring the understory layer.

Life Span: up to 15 years in the wild

  • Rather than claws, they have fingernails to assist in climbing and accessing food
  • Small, slender body with long tail gives increased agility to navigate trees and evade predators
