Grey Parrot - Five Sisters Zoo

Famous for their ability to mimic a human voice, the Grey Parrot is one of the most commonly held captive birds. They possess medium to deep grey feathers across most of their body and wings, with a bright red group on the underside of their tail. Their beaks are black and are very sharp and strong. Like many other parrot species, they are monogamous and form pair bonds.

Habitat: Western and Central Africa; rainforest areas with high levels of tree cover and tall trees to provide shelter and nesting sites (10-30m above ground).

  • Strong and sharp beaks allow them to crack open nuts and seeds for food, while also serving to protect them from predators
  • Grey parrots will roost together at night for safety
  • Males and females will share responsibility for raising chicks
