Grey Mouse Lemur - Five Sisters Zoo

The largest of the mouse lemur species, the Grey Mouse Lemur is endemic to Madagascar. They have rounded ears, a coat that is grey-red in colour and a rather pointed nose. They possess a very fluffy tail and very strong forearms and hands that allow them to climb, cling to branches and hold onto their prey.

Facts

Diet: Omnivore; preferred diet is invertebrates, though fruit, flowers and gum (tree sap) will also be consumed. Some mouse lemurs have also been observed eating reptiles and amphibians.

Weight: 58-67g

Length: 23-30cm including tail

Habitat: Madagascar; primarily forests of the western coast of the island, as they need extensive tree cover. Some have been found closer to human development provided vegetation gives enough cover and resources.

Life Span: up to 18 years under human care; shorter but not conclusive in the wild

Adapted to Survive

  • Can store up to 35% of their body weight as fat to get them through torpor when food/resources are scarce
  • Groups of up to 15 will nest together during the day for safety
