Goeldi's Monkey - Five Sisters Zoo

These New World monkeys have silky, brownish-black fur, with a mane of hair covering the neck and shoulders. They have long toes and claws to grip tree branches and can often be found sharing space and resources with other small primates. They are the only known primates to have mushrooms as a significant portion of their diet.

Diet: Omnivores; fruit, tree sap or gum, mushrooms, invertebrates, small reptiles.

Weight: 500g

Length: 45-55cm, including the tail

Habitat: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil and Bolivia; inhabit the understory of the Amazon rainforest with high levels of undergrowth.

Life Span: up to 10 years in the wild; over 20 years under human care

Adapted to Survive

  • Goeldi’s monkeys can jump up to 8 metres from one branch to the next
  • They will travel with other groups of monkeys to deter attacks from predators
  • Males support females in the raising and caring of young monkeys

  • Illegal pet and wildlife trade
  • Habitat loss by deforestation
