Eurasian Badger - Five Sisters Zoo

Known for their iconic black and white stripes, Eurasian badgers are the largest native land predator in the UK. They have very strong and muscular bodies with paws that are able to dig deep tunnels to house their family groups, known as setts.

Diet: Omnivores; invertebrates, berries, seeds and some fallen fruits.

Weight: 10-12kg

Length: up to 1m

Habitat: UK, portions of Europe and the Middle East; found in woodlands, moors, in areas of scrub bush and in or around human habitation provided there is enough space to tunnel to create setts.

Lifespan: 5 to 8 years

Adapted to Survive

  • Excess skin on their body prevents predators from getting a good grip on them
  • Non-retractable claws allow them to dig, climb trees, and even swim.

  • Expansion of urban settlements
  • Human-wildlife conflict
