Chilean Rose Tarantula - Five Sisters Zoo

Individuals have dark bodies and rose hair on their body and legs. Like all arachnids, they have four pairs of walking legs and additional appendices; chelicerae contain the fangs and a couple of pedipalps they use as sensory receptors.

  • Leg span 12 o 13 centimetres.
  • Habitat: Native to desert and scrub habitats of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia in South America
  • Lifespan: Females can live up to 20 years under humane care; males pass away a few months after mating.

  • If threatened, they can throw irritating hairs from their bodies as a defence.
  • They hunt at night, striking downward and injecting venom through their fangs.
  • Their pedipalps are used for grabbing and holding their prey.
  • Their fangs fold under their bodies
