Black Lemur - Five Sisters Zoo

Individuals have orange eyes, long fur framing their faces and ear tufts. Males are dark brown or black, and females have lighter brown coats and white tufts.

Facts

  • Diet: Omnivores
  • Length: Adults can measure between 30 and 50 cm from head to rump, and their tails can be from 40 to 60 centimetres
  • Weight: Between 1.8 and 2.5 Kilograms
  • Habitat: Native to the forests of north-western Madagascar. They have adapted to a variety of primary and secondary forests
  • Life span: Between 20 and 25 years in the wild, but can reach 30 years old in human care

Adapted to Survive

Individuals complement their diets with young leaves, seed pods, flowers, nectar, mushrooms, bark, and invertebrates.

Threats

  • Endemic to Madagascar (this means they are not found anywhere else on earth and environmental pressures in Madagascar will have a large impact upon the species)
  • Habitat loss by deforestation
  • Poaching
