Australian Rainbow Lorikeet - Five Sisters Zoo

A member of the Parrot family, the Rainbow Lorikeet is covered in colourful feathers from their head to the tips of their wings. Unusually, both males and females possess the bright plumage. Rainbow Lorikeets will reproduce yearly, hatching 1-2 chicks each time.

Diet: Herbivore; consumes mainly nectar from flowers and fruits.

Habitat: Native to Australia; found typically in the northeastern parts of the continent, roosting in higher treetops in grassland areas, forests and in urban environments.

Released in Western Australia and in New Zealand, the Rainbow Lorikeet is considered a pest and invasive species in these areas, threatening native plant and animal species.

Life Span: 20 years

These birds roost communally, often dozens at a time, giving them more safety from predators; highly adaptable to changes in their environment, able to maximize resources.
