Asia Minor Spiny Mice - Five Sisters Zoo

Asia Minor Spiny Mice come in a variety of colours, from pale gold through dark brown, depending on their environment. They have a distinctive ridge of fur from the back of their heads to their tails. Tails may be longer than body in some individuals. They are endemic (found only) in Turkey.

Diet: Omnivore; diet consists of insects, grass, and seeds.

Weight: 30-60g

Length: 27-29mm

Habitat: Southern coast of Turkey; inhabits areas from coastal plains to mountains, including rock walls in farmed areas.

Life Span: Unknown

Adapted to Survive

Able to eject their tails to escape predators; will scavenge food from carrion if opportunity exists.

Threats

Habitat fragmentation and loss; light, air, and water pollution in remaining habitat.

IUCN Conservation Status

Data Deficient, though recent research places them as Critically Endangered.
