Corsac Fox - Five Sisters Zoo

Individuals are generally grey or brown in colour with darker tones on the forehead and a white or pale yellowish colour around the mouth, throat, and neck.

Facts

Diet: Omnivores; insects, small mammals, birds and reptiles, but larger mammal carrion is also consumed.

Weight: 1.6-3.2kg

Length: 45-65 cm

Habitat: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, portions of Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and China; prefers desert steppe (arid grasslands) and avoids mountainous or heavily forested areas.

Lifespan: up to 9 years

Adapted to Survive

  • Can go without food and water for extended periods
  • Will use dens dug by themselves or other animals for protection from extreme temperatures and escape from predators
  • Thick coat of fur protects them in cold temperatures

  • Poaching for fur
  • Habitat loss
