Eurasian Kestral - Five Sisters Zoo

Eurasian Kestrels are one of the most widely distributed birds of prey, with males possessing distinctive grey feathers on their heads and tails while females are a more uniform brown with darker banding.

Diet: Carnivore; small mammals, particularly rodents, reptiles, smaller birds and some invertebrates.

Weight: 160-290g

Wingspan: 65-85cm

Length: 30-40cm

Habitat: Widespread across Europe, Asia and portions of Africa; prefers grasslands and areas of low vegetation, avoiding denser forest. Has adapted to some human encroachment and can be found near agricultural development in right conditions.

Life Span: 16 years in the wild; up to 18 years under human care.

  • Keen eyesight is also able to detect UV light, aiding in hunting of prey
  • Fan-shaped tail and wing structure enable a hovering motion to allow the kestrel to locate prey.
