Emerald Monitor - Five Sisters Zoo

Emerald Monitors can vary in colour from green to turquoise and all shades in between. Black banding is present along the body, running perpendicular to the spine. Emerald Monitors possess long claws on each foot to help them maintain stability when moving through the trees and assist in capturing prey.

Facts

Diet: Carnivore; small reptiles, small mammals, birds and invertebrates.

Weight:  300g

Length:  60-120cm, with the tail being twice as long as the body

Habitat: New Guinea and surrounding islands; resides in tropical rainforest in the trees, including palm trees, with high relative humidity.

Life Span:  up to 15 years under human care
