Dwarf Mongoose - Five Sisters Zoo

The smallest African mongoose species, the Dwarf Mongoose is incredibly social, living in family groups of up to 15 individuals. Their coat colour is varying shades of brown, red, and grey, with a short muzzle, fluffy tail and sharp teeth.

Diet: Carnivores; invertebrates, small rodents and reptiles, birds, and eggs.

Weight: 275g

Length: 20-30cm

Habitat: African continent; prefers areas with easy access to termite mounds or rocky outcroppings that provide shelter for the group. They will also seek out areas with tree cover, grasses and shrubs.

Life Span: up to 10 years under human care; unknown in the wild

Adapted to Survive

  • Will form mutually beneficial relationships with other animals, such as hornbills, to watch for predators and share resources
  • Utilize termite mounds for both food and shelter.
