Carpet Python - Five Sisters Zoo

Coastal carpet pythons are a constrictor species of snake native to Australia. They can be several meters in length with scales patterned in greenish brown, tan and light brown with cream stripes alternating though patterns are highly variable.

Facts

Diet: Carnivore; the size of the snake dictates diet, from small mammals and birds for smaller snakes to domestic cats for large snakes.

Weight: up to 10kg

Habitat: Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Prefer dwelling in trees with heavy vegetation cover or under cover in manmade dwellings.

Life span: 20-30 years under human care

Adapted to Survive

  • Scale patterns act as camouflage when in the trees or under cover
  • Able to adjust requirements for food, water and shelter to be able to live alongside human habitation

Threats

  • Predation by humans and canids
  • Loss of prey due to human expansion and agriculture
