Blue Spiny Lizard - Five Sisters Zoo

Blue Spiny Lizards are the largest members of the spiny lizard family with both males and females possessing the signature sharp scales. Only males display the blue-green shading, with females and juveniles featuring dark browns, greys, and blacks. Female Blue Spiny Lizards will give birth to live young, 6-15 at a time, rather than laying eggs.

Habitat: Southwestern North America and Northern Mexico; prefers rocky, desert-like areas that offer opportunities for both climbing and sheltering.

Scales on their body end in sharp points, deterring predators from attacking; like some other lizard species, they are able to eject their tail from their body if attacked.
