Dwarf Crocodile - Five Sisters Zoo

The smallest crocodile species, Dwarf Crocodiles are mostly a dark green to black colour as adults, with a lighter coloured belly and underneath their head. Males are generally larger than females and they will live apart from one another until mating season. Their teeth are conical in shape and interlock when closed, enabling them to efficiently take down prey.

Facts

Diet: Carnivores; small mammals, fish, crustaceans, and a variety of reptiles. Dwarf Crocodiles will also feed on carrion if available.

Weight: 18-32 kg

Length: 102-180cm

Habitat: Western Africa; prefers tropical rainforest with dense vegetation close to water such as swamps and slow-moving rivers. Dwarf crocodiles may also shelter in caves and mangrove forests.

Life Span: up to 75 years

Adapted to survive

  • Heavily armoured plated scales protect them from larger predators
  • A third eyelid (nictating membrane) enables the crocodile to see while underwater
  • Hunt mainly at night to avoid competition and threats from other predators

Threats

  • Poaching for meat and skin
  • Habitat fragmentation and loss
