Anthony's Poison Arrow Frog - Five Sisters Zoo

Individuals are dark red or brown, with a yellow or white central stripe and stripes running longitudinally through their bodies.

Facts

Diet: Carnivore; ants, beetles, mites, spiders, and other invertebrates.

Length: 2 to 2.5 cm

Weight: 2-4g

Habitat: Native to Ecuador and small parts of Peru, living in the lower layers of the tropical forest.

Life Span: Not confirmed in the wild, between 5 to 8 years under human care.

Adapted to Survive

  • They have adhesive pads on their fingers and toes, enabling them to grip onto surfaces even in storms
  • Colouration of the frog changes based on where in the forest they live and the elevation for more effective camoflauge

Threats

  • Deforestation and pollution of their natural habitat
  • Climate change causing changing weather patterns
