Citizen Science in the Community with The Conservation Volunteers

April 11, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Citizen Science in the Community with The Conservation Volunteers

10am to 4pm, Thursday 11th April

Citizen Science – public participation in scientific research – is becoming increasingly recognised as a great way for people to engage with the local environment and make a difference by collecting and recording vital information about the world around us. Across the world, volunteers gather a wide range of data used to protecting and improve the environment.

There are opportunities for anyone, of any age and ability, to get involved in Citizen Science. It’s essential to monitor wildlife and the environment across the UK so taking part really does make a difference. For the communities and individuals who take part there are lots of other benefits to getting involved: increasing skills, promoting lifelong learning and citizenship.

In this workshop we will explore the concept of Citizen Science and its use in a community context and provide you with the skills and confidence to start using Citizen Science in your own community. Participants will develop an understanding of a range of simple and accessible Citizen Science projects and try out a number of hands-on Citizen Science activities and surveys. You will learn how to effectively record and identify wildlife, understand why local wildlife recording is so important for the local community and take away skills to take part or arrange Citizen Science activities of your own.
