Anybody who has visited the zoo over the past few weeks might have noticed that Eso hasn’t been very active and there’s a good reason for that.
Eso is currently in torpor. This is similar but not the same as the deeper hibernation of smaller mammals such as hedgehogs.
Eso has several ready prepared dens around her 2 acre enclosure but this year has chose to sleep in her indoor house. Although she might be seen outside from time to time, she will not be fully active again until March where she will re-emerge thinner but as strong as ever. 🐻
