Project Description

Classification & Characteristics

This topic introduces children to classifying animals by their characteristics. From as simple as living vs non-living, to ectotherms vs endotherms, children will look at a range of animal features and study the differences and similarities between certain animals. This topic is complemented by a handling session during which children will meet a variety of animals and study their characteristics.

It is suggested that children complete the pre-visit activities in order to establish a baseline knowledge when they arrive at the zoo.

The activities include a mixture of direct teachers from the zoo staff, active learning, critical skills and enquiry challenges. They also encourage the children to work both independently and as part of a group.
