Lion arrival 600px.5

UPDATE AS AT 21st OCTOBER 2015: They are here! We are absolutely delighted to announce that the four ex-circus lions have safely arrived and are now here at Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian for all to see. After a long campaign to raise the funds needed to ensure that we could build such a wonderful permanent home for the lions and bring them safely here, it is truly fantastic to see them already settling in. They arrived here at the zoo very late on the Sunday evening (18 October 2015) and were introduced to their fabulous 2-acre home on Monday morning.

We send out our utmost thanks to everyone who has helped us to achieve this fantastic mission, and been a part of the journey. We encourage you all to see the lions here at Five Sisters Zoo, whom you have come so involved with through your fundraising efforts and online and offline sharing of their story.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Judie Gelling (mum of Tom Gelling, who is one of our zoo keepers) has very kindly donated this amazing folded book art to help raise money for the lions.

The book will be permanently on display at the Zoo, but please

have a guess as to how many pages have been folded to make the words "Five Sisters Zoo"

- each guess is £2, multiple guesses are acceptable and if there is more that one correct answer we will randomly select a winner.

Simply follow the link to our online shop to submit your guess http://tinyurl.com/nw5jgrf.

Kaylah Gourlay (who has just turned 3), successfully completed her sponsored walk over the Forth Road Bridge on Friday 26th June and has raised an AMAZING £350.00 for the lion appeal! The rain couldn't even stop her and so a huge well done from everyone at the Zoo for being such a star and to everyone who sponsored her. If that's not enough, she wants to give £10 of her own pocket money to add her name to the lion sponsor board. Look forward to welcoming you to the Zoo soon Kaylah.

PLEASE HELP TO RE-HOME 4 EX-CIRCUS MALE LIONS AT THE FIVE SISTERS ZOO THIS SEPTEMBER...Circus animals endure miserable lives of fear, deprivation and confinement, suffering physical trauma and psychological stress from caging in travelling wagons, abusive training methods and isolation. They are 'trained' from a very young age to do tricks that bear no resemblance of any behavior they have in the wild, through violence, pain and intimidation. The lions that we have pledged to re-home have had their front claws removed. Read their story or donate via www.fivesisterszoo.co.uk

Purple Glossy starling returns safely!

We are delighted to have the Purple Glossy Starling safely back at the Zoo - the bird had got through a tiny hole in the netting of the walkthrough aviary during a bad storm in March which started his epic voyage to the Bathgate Hills, the Gyle, Sherrifhall, Dunbar and then to Burntisland in Fife.  Thanks to everyone who called in with sightings of him and especially to Bruce who kept us updated on the whereabouts of the starling in Burntisland, we managed to set a bird trap and bring him home and within seconds the other 3 Glossy Starlings were around him!

Lions not coming in June....

Posted on in News

Disappointingly we have had to confirm to the Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium who are currently looking after the 4 ex-circus lions, that we will not be able to complete the enclosure by June, due to lack of funds. The lion fund is currently at just over £56K so we still need to raise a further £95K to enable us to complete their new 2 acre enclosure and transport them from Belgium. We now desperately hope to be able to bring them to live permanently at the Zoo in September and we ask you to please help spread the word about the appeal. Details of how to donate can be found at www.fivesisterszoo.co.uk. Many thanks to everyone who has kindly donated or helped in any way. We are determined to make this happen by September.

Easter Treasure Hunt: Who am I?

Posted on in News

What animal is called a 'kid' when it is young and rhymes with the word, 'coat'?

On Easter Sunday and Easter Monday Five Sisters Zoo hosted a very popular children's Treasure Hunt around the zoo following clues to find animals and hidden letters. Hundreds of kids took part, solving clues as they ventured into The Lost Kingdom, through the Castle Zoo, around the bears' woodland home and the reindeers and ending in our walkthrough Birds of The World aviary.

From all of the entries successfully completing the treasure hunt, one lucky winner was picked at random to receive a family season pass to allow the winning child and his/her family to visit the zoo as many times as they wish, including summer holidays, halloween and Christmas!

FSZ easter blog3

There were nine animals and letters to find during the treasure hunt, and with live music playing around the picnic area and Brown Bear Cafe, Easter at Five Sisters Zoo was a family day out to remember!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the treasure hunt. If you want to check how well you did, you can find all of the correct answers below. How many did you get right?
