We are very excited to offer something BRAND NEW to Five Sisters Zoo!

This February holiday we are offering young people aged 8 to 15 the chance to get out on our Nature Trail for some pond dipping, looking for some of the wonderful life found underwater in our very own wildlife pond!

After about an hour of searching for the different aquatic animals with nets, microscopes and magnifying glasses, and finding out how healthy the water is through a fun scientific investigation, participants will then head up to our Education Centre for Part Two!

In our Education Centre, your ticket reserves a space in our animal handling session, an intimate 30 minutes with some of our bigger animals (relatively speaking!). You will see a number of animals in here, with the chance to hold them and take a close up look - have you ever looked at a snail in the eye, or felt a gecko on your hands, or even met a Tenrec? (honestly, have you ever heard of one of these unusual animals?!). The animals you meet will be a surprise and may be different to these!

You will also get a lunch box too, so you don't have to worry about that! And if you are around all day, then with this ticket, you are free to explore the rest of the zoo for the remainder of your day! Any accompanying adults will pay regular zoo admission of £11.95 at the ticket desk on your arrival.

A new arrival at the Zoo!

Posted on in News

This is a 2 year old male Eurasian Badger that has come from the Natuurhulpcentrum, in Belgium (the Centre who looked after the bears and lions). He was orphaned and taken to the Centre last year, but was too tame and used to people to be released back into the wild. He's not out in the main Zoo yet as we are letting him settle after his journey - wbadger1rese're just finishing a new enclosure for him at the start of the nature trail. He's adorable!

We're exhibiting at the Glasgow SECC this September!

Posted on in News

Welcome to September, everybody!

As the kids all go back to school for a new year, we are very proud and excited to have a brand new education programme to offer for 2016/2017.

The popular indoor winter programme will be back for its second year with exclusive Keeper Q & A Sessions, Biodiversity Talks and Animal Handling Sessions. Then as we - and the bears - come out of hibernation, there'll be lots to do on our beautiful nature trail in our new outdoor learning programme!

Our programme is linked with the Curriculum for Excellence and ties in with important local and global issues, particularly concerning biodiversity, the magnificent variety of life on Earth.

The Scottish Learning Festival (SLF) at the Glasgow SECC on 21 and 22 September 2016 presents a unique opportunity for us to meet with so many teachers and academic professionals and talk about this new programme!

Devastating News

Posted on in News

Sadly we are having to come to terms with the loss of our mentor and dear friend Else Poulsen. A renowned bear expert, Else became involved with the Zoo through Hauser Bears and visited shortly after Carmen Peggy & Suzy arrived in 2012. We will forever be indebted to Else for her amazing help, support and encouragement that she gave selflessly with the ongoing rehabilitation of our 3 girls. When Carmen, Peggy and Suzy arrived they were 3 traumatized bears. We have followed her guidance and will continue to and in doing so her memory will live on.  We have three very different girls now - thank you Else, we will miss you. Our thoughts are with Else's family and friends the world over. X

Nature trail fun event and sneak preview this Saturday!

Posted on in News

Despite the recent rain and snow, we've been busy with the new nature trail and work is progressing really well! This is where the fun event will be this Saturday 23rd January for children under 16 years old at 12.30pm.....

This involves a race with coloured balls which children will drop in the burn from a bridge which runs through the zoo and will cover about 150 metres to another bridge further down the burn which will be the winning line. There will be heats of 3 with 1 coloured ball each, the winner from each heat going through to the next round until the final 3 is reached. It should be a lot of fun.

First prize will be a shop gift voucher for £50.00 and a family season pass, second prize will be a shop gift voucher for £25.00. Only one ball per child on receipt of Zoo entry ticket. If this is a success we can do it again.

Results of the ball race competition

Posted on in News

The ball race event hosted on 23 January was great fun!

There were lots of entrants racing floating coloured balls along the course of the burn, and we had five succesful young people making the final. Each child in the final walked away with a prize too! The red ball won!

As well as the competition, visitors had a sneak preview of the nature trail.

...some even saw our magnificent muntjac deer in the wood!

The nature trail is expected to be open to the public this Spring, so make sure you come along then to see how things have come along!

Thank you to all participants, and very well done to all!

Lion arrival 600px.5

UPDATE AS AT 21st OCTOBER 2015: They are here! We are absolutely delighted to announce that the four ex-circus lions have safely arrived and are now here at Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian for all to see. After a long campaign to raise the funds needed to ensure that we could build such a wonderful permanent home for the lions and bring them safely here, it is truly fantastic to see them already settling in. They arrived here at the zoo very late on the Sunday evening (18 October 2015) and were introduced to their fabulous 2-acre home on Monday morning.

We send out our utmost thanks to everyone who has helped us to achieve this fantastic mission, and been a part of the journey. We encourage you all to see the lions here at Five Sisters Zoo, whom you have come so involved with through your fundraising efforts and online and offline sharing of their story.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
