This species is the second fastest bird (on foot) and the second largest bird in the world.

Facts

  • Diet: Omnivore.
  • Weight: 36 to 40 Kg.
  • Height: up to 190 cm
  • Habitat: Savannah
  • Life span: 5 to 10 years, in human care, they can live as long as 20 years.

Adapted to Survive

  • The only bird with calf muscles, they can sprint and run for long distances to a speed up to 30 mph.
  • They are mostly solitary animals, except during breeding season and when searching for food.

Threats

  • Sport hunting
